Desert Diamond Cup, 2012

The second edition of the tournament saw it move from Hi Corbett Field (the U of A baseball team had taken it over) to Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The year also brought a title sponsor. As luck would have it, the sponsor didn’t require much of a name change: the Desert Diamond Casino.

The tournament featured LA Galaxy for the only time so far. Lucky for organizers, it was at the height of Beckham-mania. This meant that there was plenty of non-soccer hype around the tournament. It seemed every bar and restaurant claimed a Beckham siting. Some of us “real” fans got irked by the circus (“Rafa and Thierry are here too, darnit!”), but it was enough to draw over 10,000 fans to the final, the only DDC match to go to penalty kicks.

It was the first time RSL and the Revs came to Tucson. Both teams have become regular fixtures of preseason here.
