Desert Diamond Cup 2015

The fifth edition for the tournament marked the return of Sporting Kansas City, and the possibility of having the first repeat champion if SKC or Sounders won. It wasn’t to be as the two of them ended the tournament drawing in a consolation match against each other.

Despite FC Tucson ending the tourney with no points and a -9 goal differential (they managed a tie in each of the last DDCs they played in), the 2015 cup can be called a success for the team. Better weather than they had at the last two cups meant that both Saturday nights had attendances over 3,600, the most they’ve had since moving the tournament to Kino North.

This was the first time that organizers scheduled simultaneous matches. The initial matches on each day would be played one at Kino North Grandstand (once known as Field #5) and one at Kino North Stadium. These would be followed by a “headliner” at the North Stadium.

In an odd twist, the final day’s “5th vs 6th place” match should have been a Sounders FC – FC Tucson rematch. Organizers made the decision against a rematch and put them in a “3rd vs 4th place” match against Kansas City. Fans that watched that contest got exactly what they wanted: a goal from Obafemi Martins with an assist from Clint Dempsey.
