I didn’t keep y’all up to date on the Clericus Cup, whose final was held a month ago in Rome. Pontifical Gregorian University defeated Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, three goals to one. This means that the Jesuits beat the Dominicans.
Even though this tournament is between teams composed of seminarians and priests, the football is reputed to be fairly decent and the games are very competitive. The competition also features a “blue card,” which those of us who have played indoor soccer are familiar with. Rather than an ejection, players serve a five minute “bench penalty.”
The teams have boisterous fan groups, supporters of three time champions Redemptoris Mater reputed for being the loudest. The tournament features a website, where you can read a recap of the game. That is, if you can read Italian.
For those wondering, the current Pope is a supporter of Bayern München
