Monday Morning Center Back: Rising Arizona/MLS Opener edition

Once again, Tedski’s occasional series of random thoughts on random weekend matches makes its appearance on the internet scene again. What will I be going on about this time?

Phoenix Rising FC 2 (Nydard 60′, Seth pk 69′) – Grand Canyon Antelopes 2 (Delmonte 36, Moreno 58′)

Phoenix Rising skipped out on Tucson preseason this year to have two matches against Grand Canyon University. The team’s press release bragged about Omar Bravo, Sean Wright-Phillips and Matt Watson being in the line-up, but it was two penalty kick calls in the second half finished by more terrestrial players that got them the win.

Yeah, a pro team with that many ex-MLSers should have made shorter work of college kids, but let’s just call that preseason.

USA 0 – England 1 (White 89′)

I’m always going on about Jill Ellis’s reluctance to bring in new people into the national team line up. well, she only played four players that played in the last match. She showed me, didn’t she?

Real Salt Lake 0 – Toronto FC 0

The Pride of Eloy made his for-real-honest-to-God debut for Real Salt Lake on Saturday after being on the roster last season but on loan to the Monarchs. Ricardo Velazco didn’t get a long time on the field, but after entering in the 87th minute he got a rather dangerous shot on goal.

Justen Glad was not at the game because he was elsewhere winning a CONCACAF championship.

Jagiellonia Białystok 4 (Frankowski 34′, 82′, Vassilijev 41′, Goralski 59′) – WKS Śląsk Wrocław 1 (Pich 14′)

The 41st minute goal was the most Jaga of goals. New Scottish signing Ziggy Gordon was pressuring a Śląsk defender when Jacek Goralski swoops in like a hawk and strips the poor guy of the ball. Goralski ran the ball nearly to the end line and sent it to Konstantin Vassilijev, who burried the ball and Śląsk never had a good response after that. Nice win from the boys.

The game featured the debut of one-time Irish national team player Cillian Sheridan debuting for the Bees. To add insult to injury, Śląsk keeper Mariusz Pawełek got a red in the 78th minute for a collision with Fedor Černych.
