Fun, fun is in store in the SuperLiga tonight, and not just because the Revs have already beaten Morelia in this tournament. For those who aren’t paying attention, Federico Vilar, the former Atlante goal keeper who infamously struck Jay Heaps after his team lost to the Revs before, is now playing for Morelia (he was serving a long-delayed suspension for that incident earlier in this tournament). Heaps will be safely in the booth, but Vilar will have plenty of other targets after his team loses tonight.

And before you say “Well, the refs will be ready to keep the game under control and won’t let that happen again,” it’s the same ref, Carlos Betres.

Geez.

By the way, do we all have to promise not to call Morelia’s coach Tommy Boy?

It is decidedly not easy to be a fan of Newcastle United. In the last decade or so (and some older hands would argue, far before that) they have seemingly gone out of their way to ensure their fans would desert them. However Geordies are a stubborn lot and even after dropping out of the Premier League (for the first time ever) and the top flight (for the first time in 16 years) the Toon Army remained loyal. Gallows humor abounds with a fanbase who’s spiritual center is a place at St. James Park called the Gallowgate End.

Every ounce of that spirit (and a few pints more) were needed after the Powers That Be at the Premier League made our first game back in the top rank a visit with Manchester United. A 3-nil backhanding was our welcoming gift from Sir Alex & Co.

However Sunday’s home opener at SJP was a very rewarding, and quite unbelievable, 6-nil pummeling of Bob Bradley’s potential future employers the Cleveland Browns…er, Aston Villa. I’ve watched the highlights about 6 times myself.

There are still many questions to be answered and problems to be solved concerning my beloved Magpies but until the next match (against the astonishingly also-promoted Blackpool September 11th) we of the black-and-white persuasion can revel in this.

During the Ekstraklasa break this summer, I got out out the habit of checking PolishSoca and the other sources of news about my Jaga boys.

So, I find out last week that Jaga made the Europa League. I’m not sure if this is because of winning the Polish Cup or winning the Polish Supercup, but they were in, and then out.

That’s right: by the time I found out that they had qualified, they were already out of the tournament. They lost to Greek club Aris Thessaloniki FC 3-4 on aggregate in the third round.

Presented for your perusal, Jagiellonia’s entire run in the Europa League:

For those of you keeping track of such matters: Ruch Chorzów was eliminated by FK Austria Wien on a 6-1 aggregate (!) and Wisła Kraków was eliminated by Azerbaijani side FK Qarabağ. Both of these teams entered and had victories in earlier rounds. Lech Poznań is the only Polish team remaining and it will play Ukranian club FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk later this month. Poles versus Cossacks…I don’t like the odds.

This week’s hullaballoo over Hope Solo’s dissing of Boston fans and subsequent tweets accusing their supporter’s club of verbal abuse brings back talk among fans that she’s a constant complainer, even whiny. Members of Boston’s hard core supporter group, The Riptide, and management of both teams claim that no such abuse occurred and no witness has turned up to verify the alleged incident. I continue to be a fan of Solo, but yet another instance of her letting her frustrations get the best of her like this makes me wonder why.
